you're in the presence of awkwardness

Today my creative writing professor had a squawkward moment.

He was talking about unlikeable narrators, then took a moment, paused, and warned that this was going to sound narcissistic and megamaniacal, but did anyone read his book?

And as he looked over the room, not in the least bit expecting to see a hand up (though I'm sure he thought maybe one person did), and no one made a move.  He laughed and continued on with his lecture. Apparently, he had an unlikeable narrator in his first novel.

Pam said that I could've earned  brownie points and said that I did.  I mean, I probably could've just gotten by with all the research I had done about the book--I ordered it the night before this question was asked actually--but from what I understand, awkward moments just beget more awkward moments.  What if he had asked what I thought about it?  I'm such a terrible liar anyway.

Good lord, I'm mentally cringing over a hypothetical situation!
