I was behind the counter tagging clothes and whatnot, when an elderly woman looking at the jewelry case asked me how much a bracelet was. She held it up, so I took it and looked for the tag. I found it and saw that it was one of our sale items.
I handed it back to her, she accepted it, and I told her it was on sale for $3.99. I went back behind the counter.
A couple of minutes later she came back to me. "Do you know the price or not?" she asked in a rather annoyed tone. I was frightened because she was so nice to me before and because she clearly didn't remember what had occurred.
Patiently and frightfully, I went up to her and smiled. In the nicest tone I could must I told her that I had just told her the price. That it was $3.99.
She stopped for a moment and her face broke into a smile and she laughed. "Did you?" she asked, less scary and more cheerful than before. "I thought you were just being rude." And she laughed.
As nice as it was to be resolved, I couldn't help but feel bad that she thought I was rude for at least five minutes. No wonder she was annoyed.
